Contract Work

Contract Work

Considering contract work could be highly productive, even when looking for a permanent position. Many people will overlook contract roles for the security that permanent positions offer, however there are many benefits of working fixed term contracts that this article will hopefully help to address, so that next time a fixed contract role comes up you do not pass up an exceptional opportunity.

Generally, a fixed term contract will be for a specific length of time and have a set end date or will finish when a task is completed. Fixed term contracts are a flexible way of employers to recruit when needing long term cover, or a project that needs extra help or specialist support, and a permanent position is not viable. Fixed term contracts can be paid in one of two ways. Firstly, payment can be made in the same way as permanent employment, with any Tax and NI contributions being deducted, there would also be automatic pension enrolment after three months and holiday would be accrued in the same way.

The alternative option is to use an Umbrella company. This means working on a timesheet basis with the company whilst the umbrella company take away the administrative burden and process pay on a PAYE basis. Umbrella companies are under the control of HMRC meaning there is guarantee that payments are being processed correctly, without the need to set up a company therefore will not need to employ an accountant. Using an umbrella company can be financially beneficial as it can in some cases make it easier to negotiate a higher hourly rate, and also offset any expense claims against earnings. Allstaff recruitment can utilise umbrella companies for such instances to ensure our candidate gets the best possible deal.

One of the main benefits of working a fixed term contract is the flexibility. Not only does it allow you to focus on roles or positions you are good at, it also allows you to decide what companies you are happy to work for, and when you would like to work. Working fixed term contracts can also prevent boredom within a role, as you are only there for a fixed period of time, there will not be an opportunity for the role to become to feel ‘stagnant’.

By working a fixed term contract it can provide you great experience of working in environments you may not have previously experienced, with systems you may not have had previous knowledge of. It can give you a great opportunity to access all the latest skills and systems, to further your next career move.

Fixed term contracts are also beneficial as the recruitment process is usually much quicker than an equivalent permanent role, meaning that you could end up in the position much sooner.

With fixed term contracts there is also the possibility of being asked to stay on once the contract is due to end. If you have made a lasting impression with the company whilst undertaking the contract, then there is every chance they may try and accommodate a permanent position or offer a different role should one arise. It is a good way to get your foot through the door with a company.
